We’re shivanauts. We love roller derby!
Mind-boggling agility. Intense coordination and adaptability.
Wild flailing. Extreme force fields. Strength and speediness.
General badassery.

Do you skate? Or maybe you want to skate…?*
You need some Shiva Nata.
Well, you don’t need it. You can excel in derby without it. It’s been done!
- But if you want to become exponentially more agile and graceful…
- Or adapt to new strategies and adjust your play significantly faster…
- Or if skating lower, hitting harder, reacting faster while staying strong and centered sounds good…
This will help.
* Or maybe you don’t want to skate but you wouldn’t mind some derby-like sparkly radiance in your life. Shiva Nata is good for emotional coordination too! And life-coordination (when stuff just works because you’re out of your own way). And who doesn’t like being strong, giggling and flailing around ridiculously?

What’s Shiva Nata?
Body-brain training that kind of looks like martial arts, and acts like drugs-that-make-you-smart-and-hot.
It uses complex movement patterns to generate new neural connections and rewrite your patterns.
Sometimes we hate it for being so damn hard – but we get over it because Shiva Nata makes us graceful, coordinated and awesome. And for the hot, buttered epiphanies.

Shiva Nata helps you get better at derby because it:
- is an unbelievably fast way to develop insane coordination.
- improves physical agility, stability, speed of reaction.
- strengthens your powers of ADAPTABILITY so you can handle whatever comes up.
- makes you graceful as hell.
- is great for balance. So you can be un-knock-down-able.
- gives you the superpower of not giving a damn about what other people think of you.
- helps you completely own your mental, emotional and physical space. FORCE FIELDS!
- launches you into a state of intense focus and concentration.
- lets you restructure the matrix and use the force.
- makes you the one who can spot the openings and duck between the rain drops.
- teaches you to see the connections, identify the weaknesses and use the strengths.
- is occasionally done while listening to The Clash.
- is fairly punk rock, as body-mind stuff goes.

Roller derby and Shiva Nata are all about being agile.
Agile thinking, agile movement, agile reaction, agile everything.
Also being fast, hot, powerful and generally fabulous.
And having a mental map of where everything and everyone is on the track, even when it’s happening behind you.
Being able to find the hidden openings when you need them. Always knowing what your options are. Knowing what to do and when to do it.
Shiva Nata helps with all of that, as well as with your ability to constantly track the flow of complex, constantly-changing information about everyone around you.

Stories? Results?
Oh, so many. There’s no such thing as not having huge results.
Ask Juno It’ll Hurt (#518) in Denver, Colorado, who skates for Rocky Mountain.
After her first Shiva Nata training, she nailed a maneuver she’d been working on for months. Ten minutes of Shiva Nata and her teammates can expect to be pummeled at practice the next day. She’s doing her new move in the photo!
Or ask Demon Llama (#17), who skates for the Cork City Firebirds in Ireland. She runs Shiva Nata warm-ups with her team to help them get better.
Or Skatee Frakoff (#33) who skates for the Dundee Roller Girls in Scotland.
She says:
“I went from 17 laps in 5 minutes in my speed test being what I’d done for months, never any better, to suddenly getting 21 laps EASILY!”
Or Jess in the Box (#E3) who skates for JBLM Bettie Brigade Roller Derby in Washington state. She was a pretty bad-ass jammer to begin with, and Shiva Nata is just making things better.
Or me.
I’m the #2 teacher of Shiva Nata on the planet, which is kind of cool. And I’ve taught workshops all over the world.

Havi Brooks
Ooh. Do you want to watch a clip from a class?
My duck and I have worked with thousands of people, including tons of athletes — swimmers, tennis players, choreographers, dancers, martial arts practitioners. They all have incredible results. But derby is my love, and skaters are the most fun to play with.
Probably because … cultural overlap like crazy.
I never miss a bout in Portland. Find me. I’ll be at Championships too, screaming my head off. Say hi whenever!
I’ll be in purple, of course. And I might be wearing a snake?

So let’s do it.
Five minutes of practice a day totally works…
Buy the Starter Kit if you like. There’s even a discount for skaters.
Read the blog for help and encouragement — we have lots of support in the archives.
Oh, and there’s an amazing iPhone app.
If you don’t have an iPhone, no worries. Hang out at a bar and wait for someone cute to check their phone. Then become best friends with them and make them buy the app so you can practice!
Take a class!
I run trainings at our studio in Portland, Oregon — The Destuckification Playground — for Rose City’s hard-rocking Guns N Rollers, the team we gleefully sponsor.
If you skate for another team/league, contact someone on my staff to set something up. If we can’t get you to the Playground, we can send someone to you.
We can run any of the following classes or build something together to suit your team’s needs:
- Taking Shit Apart: adaptability, balance and creative ass-kicking.
- Force Fields: owning your space and being unshakeable.
- Extreme Coordination: agility training and endurance. Liquid body-math.
- Sleep Magic: how to fall asleep and care for yourself before and after bouts.
We’ll build and strengthen new neural connections to work on agility, adaptability, focus, balance and speed of reaction. Also staying calm, not getting triggered and staying out of the box.
There will be snacks and costumes! Silliness and laughing. Also your arms will look absolutely amazing. Like, Gotham-amazing.
Or sign up to find out when workshops are happening.
My programs tend to sell out way in advance. I recommend getting on the list for first notification.
We announce things pretty rarely, so you absolutely won’t get flooded with email. Once every couple months is how we usually do it.
Obviously we would never share your information or spam you or send a million emails or anything like that. And even if you never become a shivanaut, we will adore you anyway.
That’s all for now.
Yay, derby! Yay, brain training! Yay, knocking things down!
